Energy efficiency is a crucial concern in today's world, particularly in the construction industry. With energy regulations becoming increasingly stringent, building departments now enforce rigorous energy efficiency codes. You will likely need third-party services such as Manual J HVAC design and Energy Code Testing (HERS) to ensure your renovation or new build meets required standards.

At Sturdy Homes, our Energy Team is trained to guide homeowners and contractors towards achieving energy code compliance. This proactive approach helps prevent costly mistakes during construction. Whether you're planning an extension, a remodel, or building a new home, understanding these new codes is crucial.

Blower Door Test

Sturdy Homes Corp's Energy (HERS) Rating service is the gold standard when it comes to assessing the energy efficiency of homes. Our team of experts conducts pre-drywall inspections, blower door tests, and duct blaster tests to ensure your home is not only energy-efficient but also comfortable and healthy. During the pre-drywall inspection, we verify that all insulation, windows, and doors are installed according to manufacturer recommendations and best practices.

The blower door test allows us to detect any air leaks in the building envelope that can lead to energy waste and lower indoor air quality. Finally, the duct blaster test enables us to measure the efficiency of your HVAC system and identify any leaks or inefficiencies.

Our HERS Rating service is the key to achieving lower energy bills, improved indoor air quality and comfort, and higher resale value for your Long Island home.

What is a Manual J?

  • Simply put, a Manual J is a report that determines how powerful your Heating and Cooling systems should be, based on what your renovated or new home will need.

  • This ensures your HVAC system addresses your heating and cooling requirements efficiently, avoiding unnecessary waste.

Required by Code

  • Completing the Manual J is a code requirement in most cases, essential for ensuring your project meets compliance standards.

  • Depending on your specific town code, the building department may also request a Manual S and Manual D.

  • These reports build upon the Manual I by selecting suitable equipment and designing an efficient duct system.

What is needed

To complete the manuals, an Energy Rater or HVAC engineer requires the project's proposed plans and specific details, such as the type of heating and cooling system you plan to install.
